Cate Blanchett has always cherished the memories of her wedding to Andrew Upton, even though there is only one photo from the event.
While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show on March 13 to promote her upcoming thriller Black Bag, the 55-year-old actress opened up about the reason behind the lack of wedding photos. She explained that when she and Upton, 59, tied the knot in 1997, they had “absolutely no money” and couldn’t afford a photographer. Instead, they had two friends who were both photographers, but things didn’t go as planned.
“One guy got so drunk he forgot to load the film in the camera, and the other one had such a good time that he didn’t take any pictures,” Blanchett shared. “As a result, we have one picture of our wedding.”
Blanchett described the single photo as “a blurry picture of the two of us getting in the car,” adding that while it might not be the perfect shot, it has helped her to vividly remember the night.
Reflecting on the absence of photos, she admitted that she was initially upset. “I was so sad and so upset and I wept at the time that we didn’t have any pictures,” she said. “But in the end, I’m kind of quite pleased that I don’t have any pictures because I then constantly try and recall the evening.”
Blanchett also took a moment to joke about a recent photo of her and Upton, which was shown on the studio screen. “Why, why am I doing it like that?” she laughed, acknowledging how happy they looked in the image. She later referred to it as “a miracle” to be married to the same person for 27 years.
Blanchett and Upton, a playwright, director, and actor, have three sons—Dashiell, 23, Roman, 20, and Ignatius, 17—and a daughter, Edith, 10. Despite a rocky start to their relationship, Blanchett recalled that after they began dating, things moved very quickly, with Upton proposing just 21 days later.
Black Bag is set to release in theaters on March 14, 2025.
