Cheap Contract Turns Hero”: Matthew Boyd Shakes Up Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy.Yen

CHICAGO — When the 2025 season began, Matthew Boyd wasn’t on the list of names that could change the fortunes of the Chicago Cubs. He was just a “small gamble,” a cheap contract to patch up the roster. But now, with his performances far exceeding expectations, Boyd has forced the management to reconsider the entire Trade Deadline plan.

After a string of injuries and inconsistent performance for several seasons, Boyd came to the Cubs without much attention. But in just a few months, he has become the team’s most consistent pitcher with a 2.65 ERA, sixth in the National League, and just threw six scoreless innings in an 8–0 demolition of the Cardinals.

“He’s controlling everything he can control — mentally and physically,” said pitching coach Tommy Hottovy.

Boyd isn’t just holding up—he’s carrying the team.

In recent remarks, Cubs President Jed Hoyer said:

“We’re going to look to add pitching. But if we can’t find someone better than what we have, then… what else is there to trade?”

The problem is: Boyd is the guy the Cubs thought they didn’t have, and now he’s the one they need the most. Now, instead of being forced to shop in the trade market, the Cubs have to consider carefully: Should they “go all in” to trade for another pitcher, or should they put their faith in Boyd and the other young pitchers?

Shota Imanaga has stabilized.
Colin Rea has played well.
But Jameson Taillon and Jordan Wicks have struggled with injuries and inconsistency.
Meanwhile, the bullpen still has plenty of room.
So every time Boyd steps up to the mound and pitches another great game, the Cubs are embroiled in an internal debate that’s not easy to answer.

As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, the pressure is on. The Cubs must decide whether Boyd can sustain his form enough to be a part of the playoff race, or whether they need to spend money and talent to acquire more weapons.

The question isn’t easy to answer, but one thing is clear: Matthew Boyd has completely changed the way the Cubs see themselves. He’s not just a surprise bright spot — he’s a test of patience, faith, and how a team can build success not just through big signings, but through seemingly unforeseen opportunities.

And if Boyd continues to pitch like he’s been, don’t be surprised if he becomes “the reason the Cubs didn’t sign anyone … and the reason they went the furthest.”
