Chicago, July 2025 – For Cubs fans, Ryne Sandberg is not only one of the greatest players to ever wear the blue and white, but also a model of integrity, perseverance and emotion. But now, that same icon is facing the toughest battle of his life: prostate cancer has returned after a period of remission.
In an emotional post on social media, Sandberg wrote:
“I thought I had won this game. But like a surprise pitch in the 9th Inning, the cancer is back – stronger and more dangerous. This time, I feel the fatigue, but I will not move forward.”
His family – especially his wife Cindy – has always been by his side, providing emotional support throughout his treatment journey. According to sources close to him, Sandberg is undergoing intense hormone therapy and high-cost chemotherapy to prevent the spread. As his fortunes have weakened, he has continued to send moving videos to fans.
Cubs fans across the country have come together to write letters, send photos, and share memories with Sandberg – as if to give strength to a warrior who never bows his head. On social media, the hashtag #FightWithRyno is spreading like a wave of love.
“If this were the final game of my life, I would still step up to the plate like I always step up to the plate – focused, fearless, and always believing that I can create miracles,” – Sandberg said emotionally.
At 65, Ryne Sandberg still maintains the same strong demeanor as when he led the Cubs to memorable seasons. But this time, the arena is no longer Wrigley Field – but the hearts of millions of fans who are on the same side.
This fight is not just for him… but for everyone facing illness – to know that they are never alone.
