BREAKING: Yankees backup player suddenly drawing major trade buzz – 5 teams reportedly circling as his value surges!.nh1

July 14, 2025 by mrs z

The New York Yankees are expected to be buyers ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline on July 31, but the Yankees could also trade away from their roster.

Ahead of the deadline, MLB insider Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that the Yankees are receiving trade interest on backup catcher J.C. Escarra.

“One scout texted: ‘A lot of teams LOVE Escarra,’” Sherman wrote. “And keep in mind that Cashman was getting calls about Escarra as early as last trade deadline. Before the general world knew he had re-risen from Uber driver to potential major leaguer.”

Escarra is the Yankees’ backup catcher behind Austin Wells. Yet, some teams believe Escarra could be a starter and are hoping to pry away the veteran before the trade deadline.

Escarra is earning $760,000 this season and is under team control through the 2030 season. He’s not arbitration-eligible until 2028.

This season with the Yankees, Escarra is hitting .215 with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs. Whether or not New York would look to trade him before the deadline is uncertain. It would mean the Yankees would need to find another backup catcher if they do trade him.

But, if an offer blows away Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman and it improves the team, perhaps Escarra is dealt before the July 31 trade deadline.

Yankees GM Reveals Trade Deadline Goal

New York is battling for the top spot in the AL East and will be buyers ahead of the trade deadline.

Ahead of the deadline, Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman spoke to the media and revealed the team’s goal is to add pitching ahead of the deadline.

“Whether it’s bullpen guys or starting pitchers, it’s just all of it,” Cashman said. “That’s the area. We have people that are capable, but I think it also needs to get some help. And if I can do so, great. But again, there’s no guarantees. We’re going to be fully engaged and see where it takes us. Hopefully, we can run into some opportunities that can benefit us.”

The Yankees also have a need at third base, which Cashman is hoping to address. However, Cashman says he isn’t sure how much money he has to spend at the deadline.

“We’ll see. I’m going to engage everybody on everything, and I’ll share all that information with ownership and see where it takes us,” Cashman said. “I’ve had deadlines where I’ve acquired talent that had to be paid down to make it fit that we’re making money. I’ve had deadlines where we took on big contracts and stuff like that.

“Ultimately, the great thing about the Steinbrenner family is they’re willing — they want to listen to everything the market is willing to bear. Hal has always told me, ‘Do not assume anything. Make sure you take everything through me. Explain the thought process by the group and keep me informed.’”

The Yankees are 53-43 and in second place in the AL East.

Yankees All ‘Pulling’ for Escarra

Escarra has become a fan favorite in the Yankees’ locker room due to his journey to the big leagues.

After the catcher was released from the Baltimore Orioles organization, he went to the Independent Baseball League. While in Indy, he became an Uber driver.

Along with being an Uber driver, he was also a substitute teacher, a contractor worker, and a youth baseball coach to help pay the bills.

After Escarra made the Yankees and got his first big league hit, slugger Aaron Judge said he’s someone the entire team is pulling for.

“We’re all excited, we’re all pulling for that guy, we all know his story,” Judge said on April 3. “But besides that, just the type of person he is. To battle through that type of adversity, he’s come in here every single day with a smile on his face, trying to make guys better, trying to push guys. It’s been fun to watch and fun to be around. He just brings a different energy into this clubhouse, and it’s contagious.”
